G eorgia is revamping its testing program to reflect the most recent version of its standards. Students will take tests directly tied to the new curriculum in the spring of 2000. The state also focused on the quality of its teacher education programs last year, providing a "guarantee" that the universities will retrain classroom teachers if schools don't think they are doing an adequate job, as long as they are teaching in the field for which they were prepared. In addition, the state significantly strengthened its charter school law last year by enabling local school boards to approve charters.

    * NOTE: The equity grade is based on 1994-95 date, the most recent available.
